Being the mother of a child, each one of us always tries to nurture our baby in a good environment. This is just to make them healthy and sound in all respect – be it health, development of body and mind. The most important thing that every parent is worried about is which type of food should be given to their babies, which can boost the immunity system in them. However, it is seen that most of the infections occur in the damp season like monsoon and especially children are highly susceptible to get flu, cough, and cold. Whereas, on the other hand, those children that have a strong immune system are not affected due to this weather.
According to Dr. Anju Sood, a Bangalore-based Nutritionists, “As the level of immunity drops down in monsoon, the microorganisms get enough moisture to grow, causing you to be susceptible to disease.” And as children are more carefree and remains mostly outdoors, hence, are likely to get affected.
It is therefore suggested to consume more and more green leafy vegetables, taking powerful antioxidants that are rich in vitamin C, stay hydrated and take up more nuts and seeds.
Listed down are some of the major immune-boosting food for your child:
Turmeric: Considered to be antibiotic, antiseptic, and anti-inflammatory, turmeric has its importance from ages. Its active component curcumin makes it a powerful antioxidant. Add a pinch of turmeric to milk and make them drink during bedtime.
Vitamin C Rich Foods: Seasonal fruits and veggies are said to contain phytonutrients that have proved effective to combat against bacteria and other infections. This includes peaches, cherries, jamun, guava, etc.
Dry Fruits and Nuts: Most children seem very choosy in eating vegetables and fruits, but they definitely would like to munch on crunchy nuts. Serve them a bowl of a good mix of nuts including dates, raisins, almonds, cashews. These are known to be rich sources of vitamins and antioxidants. As they are also a good source of fat and proteins, hence, can offer energy to your child.
Mushrooms: Mushrooms are rich in vitamin D and antioxidants. They play an important role in boosting the immune system. Serve them either in the form of sandwiches or make a bowl of hot mushroom soup for them.
Meat and Fish: No matter whether it’s mutton, chicken, or fish, each of them is rich in proteins. Meat is the highest source of omega 3 fatty acids, zinc, iron, and vitamin D. Not only helps in building and repairing our body tissues, but also helps in boosting WBCs, which itself is responsible for fighting against infections.
Dairy Products: If your kid hates drinking glass of milk, no worries! It’s time to break the monotony by offering them milkshakes, smoothies, and fruit yogurt. If you are a mon of 6 months old baby and already have introduced solids in their diet, then the best option is to feed them with plain yogurt. They are rich in probiotics. The good bacteria in it helps the baby to fight off with the harmful bacteria making their tummy happy-happy. As they are a rich source of Vitamin D, hence are proved to be a great immunity booster.
Eggs: Research has proved that eggs have shown an immense effect on those who lack the vitamin. Lack of vitamin D makes an individual more susceptible to illness. Eggs are packed with proteins and contains other immune-boosting nutrients like selenium and Vitamin B.
Sweet Potatoes: These seasonal tubers are rich in beta-carotene. When consumed, body converts it into Vitamin A which plays a major role in boosting the immune system.
Thus, to conclude, the best and effective way to enhance the immune power of your child is to make them eat the right food, rather than gulping and munching on unhealthy foods.
