Your baby has turned 6 months today, and you might be
wondering what type of solids need to be introduced in his diet. Well, apart
from breast milk, your baby definitely needs some extra nutrients that can only
come from the outer sources.
Hey, this time is actually an exciting time for your baby,
because you are getting them introduced into a new world of food, isn’t it?
They will be introduced into a world of diverse nutrients and flavors. This is
the age when you are making your baby get ready to accept all types of meals.
Always keep in mind that feeding them with solids is just to
make your baby distinguish the flavors and textures. Breast milk or formula
milk will always remain for them as primary nutrition until the first year.
Nutrient requirements for baby
- Iron: Iron-rich food helps in carrying oxygenated blood to develop different body parts
- Calcium: Calcium-rich food helps in healthy bone and teeth development
- Proteins: Acts as building blocks of cells
- Zinc: Enhances cell repair and growth
- Fat: Stimulates brain development
- Vitamins: Different vitamins have different roles in the baby’s body. Some of the essential vitamins are A, D, E, K, B1, B2, B3, B6, B12
- Carbohydrates: Provides energy for daily activities
- Minerals: Minerals like sodium & potassium helps in baby’s growth
Food Dosage for your baby
At around 6 months only a few tablespoons of food 1-3 times a
day are enough. This is just to make your baby comfortable with the advanced
texture. Once your baby has adjusted with the food, you can simultaneously
increase the quantity. Grab only one fruit or one veggie and continue to feed
them till 3 days. If your baby doesn’t cause any allergy, then, you can
continue it with other food.
Recommended foods for babies
Expert nutritionists and pediatricians have suggested the list of foods that have proved to be essential in baby’s growth and development
- Veggies Puree: This includes French beans, sweet potatoes, pumpkins, potatoes, carrots etc.
- Fruits puree: This includes fruits like apple, banana, avocado, pear, peaches etc either in mashed or puree form
- Cereal porridge: Porridge can be made either by single grains or can be mix of multiple grains. This includes barley, oats, millets, wheat etc.
Signs & Symptoms of Allergic Baby
If you see any symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, pain in the stomach, rashes, or constipation, stop the food immediately that you were giving to your baby. If it still persists, immediately talk to your pediatrician.
Food chart of 6 months old baby
You can provide your baby with the following meal plan
Early morning: Breast milk or Formula Milk
First Food – Breakfast
- Mashed avocado
- Whole Grain baby cereal
- Purees of pears and peaches
- Peeled and steamed apple nicely squashed with some milk
Mid-Morning
Breast Milk or Formula Milk
Lunch
- Pureed apples
- Liquid daal
- Unsweetened whole milk yogurt
- Avocado and Pea Puree
- Veggies puree
Evening
Breast Milk or Formula Milk
Dinner
- Mashed apple and banana
- Beat puree
- Combo of seasonal fruits and vegetables
- Barley Cereals
You can feed your baby with breast milk or formula milk during bedtime.
