Know More About Diabetes and Its Types

Diabetes, the name itself appears very threatening as it has become a very common disease occurring in every second individual. Addressed with a very simple name, it has very complicated effects. Diabetes also known as blood sugar is a disease that occurs when the blood glucose level in body increases. Blood glucose is the main source of energy and generally comes from the food that we consume. This glucose is being extracted from the food and then taken into the cells to be used for energy. However, this process is being carried out by a hormone named Insulin.

In our body, an organ named pancreas that is present behind the stomach releases hormone. When the glucose level in blood rises, special cells i.e Beta cells in pancreas releases insulin. Insulin causes the sugar to be either used as energy or to be stored as fat. And this results in lowering down the sugar level.

But, sometimes, when body fails to make sufficient amount of Insulin or doesn’t use Insulin well, in that instances, the glucose stays into the blood and couldn’t reach the cells. And this results to the increase level of glucose in blood causing Diabetes.

Diabetes are classified into Type I, Type II and gestational

Type I: When our immune system by mistake attacks or kills Beta cells, Type I diabetes occurs. When there is no release of insulin, sugar start accumulating in blood without being used as energy. Type I diabetes is very common in childhood. This diabetes is always treated with insulin.

Type II: Type II diabetes generally occurs when body doesn’t make enough insulin or is unable to use the released insulin. Sugar instead of being used as energy starts accumulating in blood. This diabetes is more common in adult, but, children can also be affected.

Gestational Diabetes: This is a temporary form of diabetes that occurs during pregnancy and most of the time goes away when baby is born. It has an increased risk of developing diabetes both for mother and child.
